Here we have a selection of vintage enamel kitchen canisters, which were originally in use in a nunnery in Lincolnshire and feature white enamel with black script. Perfect for adding a vintage look to any kitchen whilst retaining their practicality and usefulness.

The canisters have all had their lids painted at some point in their long life, and this paint has an aged and distressed look. There are some chips in the enamel on all the containers but nothing that would affect their use. Some of the wording has worn, as can be seen on the tapioca and sultanas and cornflour, and old sticky labels are still attached to the lids of some where the nuns have had an alternative use for them.

Enamel canisters emerged as a popular Edwardian substitute for stoneware jars. In addition to being lighter and easier to carry, they were also more durable in bustling kitchens since they didn't break when dropped on flagstone floors.

The most coveted canisters are those labeled with names, reflecting a time when items like lump sugar, sago, and tapioca were everyday essentials.
